5 Warning Signs of Heart Disease You Shouldn't Ignore

By Dr. James Whitfield ·

Heart disease remains the leading cause of death in the United States, but many warning signs appear long before a heart attack or stroke. Recognizing these symptoms early can save your life.

1. Chest Discomfort

Pressure, squeezing, or pain in the center of your chest that lasts more than a few minutes may signal reduced blood flow to the heart.

2. Shortness of Breath

Difficulty breathing during normal activities or while lying flat can indicate heart failure or valve problems.

3. Unusual Fatigue

Extreme tiredness that doesn't improve with rest, especially in women, is a commonly overlooked heart disease symptom.

4. Swelling in Legs or Ankles

Fluid retention may mean your heart isn't pumping effectively.

5. Irregular Heartbeat

Palpitations, fluttering, or a racing heart could indicate arrhythmia requiring evaluation.

If you experience any of these symptoms, schedule an appointment with a cardiologist promptly.
